Why a haunted house?
The haunted house industry is multi-million dollar. Halloween is the second highest-grossing commercial holiday behind Christmas. I can’t think of a more exciting way to raise money for a great cause around this time of the year and getting to have fun serving in the process. Surely, Halloween may have an uneasy history with people like myself a part of the Church, but it is important to distinguish the different aspects of the holiday and know what to reject vs. redeem.
Why in Stapleton?
Stapleton is one of the older waterfront neighborhoods of Staten Island, built in the 1830s on land once owned by the Vanderbilt family. It was a long-time commercial center of the island, but has struggled to revive after several decades of neglect following the building in 1964 of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, which shifted the commercial development of the island to its interior.
Plus, when you hear families from the area saying such things as, “no one has ever done anything like this for us before,” it puts it all into perspective.
Why with the NycArtsCypher?

Remember, all proceeds of the “Return of the Haunted 2” haunted house on Staten Island will go to such community efforts as the NycArtsCypher’s Anti Bullying initiative (http://thecyphercares.org)

HAUNTED HOUSE RETURNS TO STATEN ISLAND!
“This unique fundraiser was inspired by Joe Khalil then an intern at NycArtsCypher. His crew pulled together an awesome event. Please contact us soon …” — http://www.nycartscypher.com/#!ReturnoftheHaunted/cq6o
How did one Christian’s vision for a haunted house on Staten Island come about?
I remember my first haunted house experience like it was yesterday. It was actually a hayride on a farm in New Jersey, and it was my grandma who has taken all of the family. Although it was quite scary seeing my favorite horror movie villains up close and in person, there was something thrilling about being scared at such a young age.
After running a highly publicized wrestling promotion on Staten Island for 3 years and attending a haunted house every weekend of October for 5 years, I felt something was missing from growing up so fast, and that was the idea of creating an actual haunted house from scratch.
Surely, such an idea may sound corny to some and even pagan to others, but as a Christian who enjoys a good chuckle, I felt Staten Island could always use some good in their community (especially since most haunted houses in NYC simulate nudity, rape, or mutilation and most believers forget Christmas, Easter, Yoga, and Starbucks are inherently evil too! ;)
With a dedicated team of workers behind me and a powerhouse leader from MTV’s ‘True Life’, all of our proceeds will be making a difference in his non-profit organization, the poverty-stricken Stapleton neighborhood, and at-risk/incarcerated youth.
When all is said and done, life truly doesn’t get much better than this day, October 14th, 2011!
